Lancashire set for more thunderstorms and heavy rain today as Met Office extends weather warning

Lancashire is bracing itself for more thunderstorms and heavy rain today after the Met Office extended a weather warning.

It comes after the region enjoyed another scorcher of a day on Saturday, topped off with a stunning sky in the evening. The varied weather conditions in recent weeks look set to continue with forecasters predicting more bad weather for the county on Sunday (June 25).

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms yesterday covering eastern England and Scotland. This morning, the weather agency has extended the alert to cover the whole of east Lancashire.

The alert comes into force at 1pm and covers Blackburn, Darwen, Accrington, Rossendale, Burnley, Clitheroe and Nelson. It lasts until 9pm and some locations could see up to 40mm of rain falling in two hours as well as ‘frequent lightning and large hail’.

While central and western areas of Lancashire are not covered by the weather warning, the Met Office forecast shows thunderstorms will hit the Lancaster area at 1pm, the Preston area at 2pm and in Lytham between 1pm and 3pm. No thunderstorms are yet forecast for Blackpool, however the seaside town will be hit by several hours of rain from 1pm.

A yellow weather warning is in force from 1pm to 9pm today

The Met Office said: “Thunderstorms will develop in some places, from early afternoon, as cooler conditions follow from the west. There is a chance that an organised line of thunderstorms could develop across northern Britain during Sunday afternoon before clearing east into the North Sea during the evening.
