  • Trinny shared her favourite skincare rules and go-to supplements
  • She also shared her tips for plane beauty and reducing jetlag
  • Her brand Trinny London has millions of loyal followers

At 59, Trinny Woodall still boasts the radiant skin and magnetic energy she had when she was decades younger.

But it takes work, with the enormously successful Trinny London founder admitting her seemingly effortless appearance is down to a consistent skincare routine, regular treatments, plenty of sleep and supplements.

She also does disciplined exercise in sessions shared across her social accounts and has been getting Botox since she was 30 years old.

Speaking to FEMAIL at her London HQ, Trinny said the main focus for Australians right now should be healing their post-summer skin, not just slapping on layers of moisturiser to protect it from the cold weather.

‘It’s about the ravage of summer and dealing with it; even though people are much more careful now with SPF I still see a lot of sun damage in Australia,’ she said.

‘Pigmentation is going to be heightened so what are we doing about that? To me it’s double dosing on pigmentation treatments and doing some [safe] micro-needling to break down any that’s come up.’

She also suggests upping Vitamin C as its known for treating pigmentation, and introducing retinoids (Vitamin A).

‘If it’s a recent pigmentation, accelerating cell turnover [via retinoids] will push through and break down pigmentation… unless you have melasma which you need professional treatment for,’ she said.

‘My skin oddly is quite consistent all year round as I put a lot of effort into it,’ she added.

‘When you have a smaller skincare routine you will feel the seasonal change more but when you have a consistent one with active ingredients you don’t need to. The one thing I might do differently each year is use a lighter moisturiser in summer.’

Trinny, who exclusively uses her own skin range, is also a big believer in supplements and takes 25 a day. While she admits they’re not for everyone, she has seen a huge difference with her own routine and mood over time.

As always, medical professionals should be consulted before trying anything new.

In the morning she takes four or five capsules of INGENIUS Beauty collagen followed by estrogen, testosterone and Magnolia Rhodiola – she says the latter has been a game-changer for her mood.

‘It’s really good if a woman is pre-menopausal and not on antidepressants… it’s an instant mood lifter,’ she said.

She also takes a lot of Vitamin C and swears by Glutathione – a powerful antioxidant known to decrease inflammation and reduce oxidative stress in the body.

Travel with Trinny: My rules for the plane and avoiding jetlag

SKINCARE

When I travel I decant every single thing I use into small bottles so that I am never without a single product and I’ve done that for 20 years.  I could never travel and not bring my peptides or my favourite things like my microneedle and my gua sha.

Travel is about your lymphatic system more than anything because if you are on planes or eating more salt or changing your diet you will get more toxicity in your face which will make you puffier.

Having great tools to go through your lymph and really release any toxicity is the first thing you want to do.

When I come to Australia I generally always have an LED mask with me and I do a lot of layering. I will do Tip Toe in and Plump Up together as a layer then I will let it dry and do another layer and that gives me that bouncy skin.

The thing is with Plump Up on a plane – you need to layer it with something on top.

Hyaluronic acid as a gel is the worst thing to have on a plane because on its own it grabs onto moisture. And when there’s no moisture in the air like in a plane, it grabs onto all the moisture in your skin. It makes your skin looks dryer. You must put a barrier on top.

I put on Plump Up, Bounce Back and then a dry sheet mask for eight hours. I’ll leave it on the whole time even if I go to the loo. It was easy when masks were normal because nobody could see how mad I looked.

HAIR

Generally I use Hair Story – an amazing shampoo and conditioner in one which has transformed my hair quality.

I’ve lost quite a lot of hair from Covid and it’s taking a while to grow back. Hair Story is better because it doesn’t strip or foam and afterwards your hair is hydrated and cleansed and doesn’t go greasy.

SLEEP

If I go to Australia I will be on my time until Singapore and then I will go straight to the time I’m going to and will control that with pills. For me sleep is the most important thing. I want to be sleeping until the wheels land and I do that wherever I go.

GUT AND DIET

I take a tonne of supplements that are very good for jetlag so I take about 5,000mg of vitamin C for the first three days and I take Symprove which is the best pre and probiotic. It’s very good if you suffer from acne as well. I think you should triple probiotics when you travel because any gut health is important.

I will try and drink a lot of water and eat well. I know that whatever you do on a plane is three times as bad as if you do it on the ground. To me drinking alcohol on a plane is insane

She also takes Vitamin A, D and K, hormone support capsules and magnesium citrate in the evening.

‘II think women who have gone through menopause – more than those who are doing it for the fad of working out – need to consider taking some form of protein powder too,’ she said.

‘And as of this week I am doing that because I am 60 next year.’

In terms of her diet, one of Trinny’s main rules is significantly reducing sugar.

‘I never have refined sugar anymore either – I feel the inflammation in my body. I also have broccoli before every meal now after reading The Glucose Goddess which beautifully explains the importance of blood sugar.

There’s plenty in the works this year for Trinny, too, especially with her hugely popular Trinny London skincare brand

‘I’ve noticed a huge difference in my energy levels and I don’t have that drop in the afternoon.’

A morning detoxing glass of lemon in warm water is, as Trinny described, her ‘oldest beauty hack’.

‘When I was 14 I went with my mother every week to a beauty clinic and I hated going along and sitting there bored. But they gave you hot water and lemon and Mum told me “no matter what do this every morning and I have… ever since”.

‘I’d say that’s the secret but so many things are the secret aren’t they? Then you meet someone who does nothing and they look great so who knows? It’s all about how much you feel you want to do. Nobody is under any obligation to do anything at all.’

What are Trinny’s top anti-ageing secrets?

* Reduce sugar as much as you can without depriving yourself of joy – switch ice cream for apple with peanut butter or a good quality stick of dark chocolate

* Have good skincare routine and stick to it

* Only invest in high quality skincare gadgets if you are going to stick to them. Buy them and see them through if you want to see results. Don’t make it a chore and use them on the loo for five minutes if you’re short on time

* Take marine collagen every day and put it on your face

* Use makeup with nourishing ingredients that heal your skin while you wear it

* Focus on lymphatic drainage methods on your face, it is excellent for reducing puffiness

* Listen to your body and your skin, it will show you physically if you have inflammation in your body

‘I am working on something now which is in a category where I feel nothing has succeeded so far. I can’t say much but instead of looking at what’s out there we are now creating ingredients ourselves for problems nobody has conquered which is really exciting,’ she said

There’s plenty in the works this year for Trinny, too, especially with her hugely popular Trinny London skincare brand.

And there is one ‘top secret’ project she is feeling particularly excited about.

‘I was down at our lab the other day and looking at the ingredients out there that are just being formulated. It’s my favourite time of the week,’ she said.

‘I am working on something now which is in a category where I feel nothing has succeeded so far. I can’t say much but instead of looking at what’s out there we are now creating ingredients ourselves for problems nobody has conquered which is really exciting.

‘I just want to yell and scream about how great these ingredients are. I want people to realise and understand how special they are going to be… I can’t wait.’
